On Wednesday 11 January 2023, the Directorate of Fisheries received a tip about the capture of 650 farmed cod of 3 kilograms in Frosvika in Meløy municipality. Subsequently, the Directorate of Fisheries has received several inquiries and questions regarding the follow-up of the incident.
"We have now carried out a thorough review of our work in the case, including the inspection and the results thereof. We are therefore now presenting a report with our findings", says Britt Leikvoll, section manager for the strategic aquaculture section in the Directorate of Fisheries.
Prioritizes supervision of cod farming
In 2023, the Norwegian Directorate of Fisheries has prioritized the supervision of businesses engaged in farming cod. All active cod breeders have been inspected. The inspection focused on the companies' routines to prevent escape, and the companies' routines to prevent and possibly detect spawning maturation.
"We are planning a dialogue meeting with the industry at the beginning of November, and will also prioritize inspections aimed at cod farming in 2024", says Leikvoll.
