Authorities addressed the main challenges that their respective countries have in moving towards more sustainable aquaculture.
The Undersecretary of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Julio Salas, held a meeting yesterday with the Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Oceans of Canada, Annette Gibbons, in order to address the visions of the respective governments regarding the development of the aquaculture industry.
The meeting was held at the offices of the Ministry of Economy in Santiago and was attended by the head of the Fisheries Development Division, Juan Santibáñez, and the lawyer Rocío Parra, on behalf of the Undersecretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture.
While representing Canada were the senior deputy minister of Fisheries and Oceans, Alix Dostal, the commercial counselor of the Embassy, Carlos Rojas-Arbulú and the commercial attaché Renée Plouffe.
At the meeting, the authorities analyzed the scenario facing aquaculture and, in particular, salmon farming in both countries and in the world. and they confirmed that many of the challenges they face are similar and, therefore, it is very valuable to share experiences and views on the matter.
One of the commitments that the Department of Fisheries and Oceans of Canada (DFO) has assumed is to develop, in the province of British Columbia, a plan for salmon farming to transition from traditional sea cage farming to more sustainable.
Therefore, for Vice Minister Gibbons it was of great interest to know which technologies the Undersecretary of Fisheries considers most promising to improve the sustainability of the sector in Chile and worldwide. So too the governance and priorities of the aquaculture and salmon sector of our country and the vision for the future.
The Deputy Minister of Canada is in Chile to participate in the high-level panel for a sustainable ocean economy, which is taking place today and tomorrow in Viña del Mar.
