Sernapesca Detects Illegal Operation of Vessels in Aysén
(CHILE, 2/1/2024)
During an aerial operation in the outer waters of the Aysén region, officials from the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service (Sernapesca) identified a total of 29 vessels, both industrial and artisanal, extracting fishing resources. Although the objective was to verify the correct extractive operation in the area, violations of current regulations and the agreement of contiguous areas were detected.
After more than 4 hours of flight, the inspectors spotted 27 artisanal vessels carrying out pippin and red spot extraction maneuvers. Of these, 16 vessels from the Los Lagos region and one from the Biobío region operated illegally on the Southern Ray's bream (Brama australis) resource, while another 6 from the Los Lagos region breached the agreement on contiguous areas by extracting Skottsberg's gigartina (Gigartina skottsbergii).

After the aerial inspection, a team of Sernapesca officials carried out a rigorous documentary review with the material obtained during the flight, determining that 22 vessels were operating illegally.
The Regional Director(s) of Sernapesca Aysén, Jorge Padilla, commented on the actions to follow and highlighted the occurrence of practices related to the obstruction of inspection by some vessels. “We call on you to respect both the current regulations and the agreement of contiguous zones, whose main objective is to take care of the sustainability of resources and the artisanal fishing sector. For our part, I reiterate that we will maintain inspections in both the external and internal seas,” he concluded.
