First Jack Mackerel Shipment from Coquimbo to Africa

An important regional economic milestone occurred with the shipment of export fishing products from the port of Coquimbo. In this sense, officials from the Regional Directorate of the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service (Sernapesca), had an important participation during the past weekend, in relation to the health and safety certification of resources intended for foreign consumption, through the inspection of the container consolidation and sealing process, which was carried out directly at the product manufacturing plant.

 Cecilia Solís, Regional Director of Sernapesca Coquimbo, indicated that the shipment corresponded to 28.3 tons of fresh frozen jack mackerel that the company PVA Chile SpA shipped to Togo, a country located on the central-western coast of Africa. The resources were shipped aboard the cargo ship MSC Acapulco, which set sail from the northern port this Wednesday.
“This is an important milestone for the region, since it is the first time that a shipment of these characteristics departs from the new Site 3 of the Port of Coquimbo, opening a new market for the hydrobiological resources that are produced in the area,” she explained.
.jpg) For his part, the Deputy Director of Safety and Certification of Sernapesca, Héctor Escobar, indicated that “it is relevant to emphasize the notable growth of exports to the African continent, represented mainly by frozen jack mackerel. Nations such as the Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso and, especially, Nigeria stand out, which occupies the fourth position among the destinations with the highest export volumes, reaching 149,586 tons during the year 2023".
This was the first shipment with an international destination from Coquimbo, but it will not be the only shipment of export hydrobiological resources that leaves from the area, since the shipment of cuttlefish is contemplated in the coming days.
