Modern aquaculture research centre construction progresses
(CHILE, 12/9/2011)
Aquainnovo SA is finalizing the construction of the Aquaculture Research and Transfer Centre in the town of Lenca, in Los Lagos Region.
According to the company's general manager, Rodger Miranda, the centre, which will be 2,500 square meters, will be one of the most modern of its kind in Latin America.
In February Aquainnovo – principal owner of Empresas AquaChile and of the University of Chile -- started to build the centre in a 2.5-hectare area. The new facilities will house four research rooms and another one for quarantine purposes.
The Company and the Production Development Corporation (Corfo) invested more than USD 6 million in this project, expected to be ready by the end of this month, Aqua reported.
"The centre will allow us to conduct testing and research for genetic resistance to disease, nutrition, health, among others, with a high technological and environmental control level using the highest standards (world class) in terms of quality, control and biosecurity," Miranda said.
That "will enhance the development of scientific research in our country, as well as attract researchers to conduct experiments in Chile," the executive continued.
The inauguration is expected to take place in March 2012 as soon as the freshwater and seawater systems are in full operation.
"Chile is the world's largest coho salmon producer and these developments help to strengthen the industry. In fact, with this AquaChile companies are using between 25 days to 30 days less for salmon to reach harvesting status," Miranda stressed out.
The various types of research to be carried out in the new centre are:
- Genetics;
- Genomics;
- Challenge to disease;
- Nutrition;
- Recirculation;
- Vaccination testing.
And it will have infrastructure for:
- Open flow and closed flow hatchery;
- High technology water treatment system;
- High standards of biosecurity;
- Quarantine Room for roes and for fish;
- 156 experimental ponds in an area of 0.5 m3 and 7 m3 for four separate rooms;
- Capacity to work with fresh water, sea water and mixtures;
- Temperature control from 5 °C to 28 °C;
- Offices and facilities with rooms for 10 people.
