Smoked salmon recalled due to potential listeria contamination
(UNITED STATES, 1/3/2013)
Products potentially contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes have been identified and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has confirmed that Delifish SA has issued a voluntary recall of the cold smoked salmon products in question. They were placed on the market in the US produced from lots 249 through 291 and manufactured between 5 September and 17 October 2012.
There have been no complaints or illnesses reported at this point. Symptoms of Listeria monocytogenes contamination in consumers include serious and sometimes fatal infections in those with weakened immune systems, and in the general population short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.
The potentially contaminated cold smoked salmon was possibly distributed to retail stores in California, Virginia, Ohio, Illinois, Florida, Georgia, Texas, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Puerto Rico under the following brand names: Black Bear of the Black Forest Smoked Salmon, Food Service Cold Smoked Salmon Trim, Einstein Darn Good 4 oz Retail, Food Service Whole Smoked Side 3-5 lb pack, Silver Source Smoked Salmon Foodservice 2-3 lb smoked fillet, Royal Fjord Smoked Toppers 6oz and Royal Fjord Sliced Smoked Salmon Loin, 12-14 oz.
Delifish’s voluntary recall is being conducted as a precautionary measure in cooperation with the FDA and is based on Listeria detection in a few of the batches of recalled products.
No other products supplied by Delifish or Marine Harvest USA are involved in this case.
Separately, smoked salmon produced by a Miami subsidiary of Multiexport Foods Inc together with Tampa Bay Fisheries Inc is being recalled in 42 states due to possible listeria contamination. The products were sold at Sam’s Club stores and consumers are being encouraged to check the UPC codes of their products against those of the potentially contaminated ones, Los Angeles Times reports.
The recall was launched on 22 December for the 12 oz Twin Pack and the 1.25 lb Pack under the “Paramount Reserve” that were distributed between 12 November and 21 December to retail outlets across the country.
