Marine Harvest to close baked salmon plant
(CHILE, 7/2/2013)
The closure of the smoked salmon plant Delifish, located in the area of Chinquihue in Puerto Mont, will cause the redundancy of more than 200 workers in three months.
It was the commercial director of Marine Harvest America, Gianfranco Nattero, who personally told the employees about the imminent cessation of the factory operations.
"The business has reached loss levels that make it unfeasible to maintain their operations," the company explained in a statement.
"This business area was moved from Santiago to Puerto Montt in the year 2009, but unfortunately a number of circumstances eventually took place and determined the current situation," added the firm, according to Aqua.
From the company it was explained that they initially had to deal with a limited availability and poor quality of raw materials, resulting from the health conditions affecting the industry, and that in 2012, a microbiological event worsened its financial status.
"Added to this, and in a parallel way, a comprehensive review of the value added business in Marine Harvest ended with the closure of five plants globally," they added.
It is expected that the closure of the plant located in Chinquihue (Los Lagos Region) is to take place during the second half of September.
The measure was communicated to the 230 affected workers, with whom they will work on re-employment and training projects to expand their choices when looking for work, and also to the relevant authorities and to the company union.
The mayor of Puerto Montt, Gervoy Paredes, described this news as "a serious issue" and said he was planning to meet with the labour regional ministerial secretary to find solutions for people who will become unemployed, SoyChile reported.
