Four of Scotland’s leading salmon farmers are embarking today on a landmark trade mission to India.

The five-day mission to New Delhi and Mumbai, organised by trade body Salmon Scotland, is the first time it has brought producers from the sector together for a dedicated overseas trade mission anywhere in the world.

Scottish salmon farmers are targeting a new export market which is estimated to be worth just over £130 million over the next decade.

Japanese industrial group Yanmar has agreed a recommended cash offer for AKVA Group, valuing the Norwegian aquaculture technology supplier’s equity at approximately NOK 5.9 billion (€543 million).

The proposed offer of NOK 161 (€14.81) per share has unanimous board support. Shareholders representing approximately 92% of AKVA’s shares, excluding treasury shares, have committed to accept, subject to customary conditions, the company said in an October 2 stock-exchange announcement.

Grieg Seafood is adjusting both its harvesting volume and cost expectations for 2026 following increased mortality at a farm in September.

Grieg Seafood stated in a stock exchange release on Friday that an unexpected algae incident led to gill damage and increased mortality at one of the company's locations.

According to the company, the biology in the sea was good throughout August, before the situation developed negatively at the site during September.

RAS technology and renewable energy to support yellowtail kingfish production

CurAqua B.V. plans a land-based RAS farm at Bullenbaai, reusing treated water and renewable energy.

Phase one targets 400 metric tons of yellowtail kingfish annually, with expansion to 1,600 tons, pending environmental studies and permits.

Held in Kópavogur on 22–24 September, IceFish 2026 attracted nearly 8,500 visitors, exhibitors and delegations worldwide.

UK mackerel fishermen and processors have welcomed a doubling of recommended catches, while urging wider international management agreement

The Scottish and UK mackerel industry has welcomed a sharp increase in the size of the north-east Atlantic stock, following new scientific advice from the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES).

ICES has advised that the total allowable catch (TAC) for north-east Atlantic mackerel in 2027 should be 352,938 tonnes, representing a 102% increase on its advice for 2026. The assessment puts current spawning stock biomass at 3.2 million tonnes and forecasts this will rise to 3.34 million tonnes in 2028.

A striking Sustainable Seafood September window at Whole Foods Market has been one of the highlights of a month-long campaign encouraging UK shoppers to choose sustainable seafood and help keep their favourite fish dishes on the menu.

The window installation brought the Marine Stewardship Council’s (MSC) Buy Blue, Protect Dinner campaign theme to Kensington High Street, putting the blue MSC ecolabel and the message of sustainable seafood front and centre for shoppers throughout September.
