IN BRIEF - Norway continues to dominate Korean imports of fresh salmon

As of October 4, 2024, South Korea has imported a cumulative total of 18,968 tons of fresh salmon, which is similar to the 18,903 tons imported during the same period last year.
However, the import value has dropped by nearly 10%, from USD 297,650 in 2023 to USD 267,989 in 2024.
Most of the imports came from Norway, accounting for 18,315 tons, followed by Chile with 445 tons and Canada with 90 tons. The import prices per kilogram were highest for Norway at USD 14.19, followed by Chile at USD 12.61, and Canada at USD 12.23, the lowest.
Of the top 12 spots held by the freezer and factory trawler fleet, eight are occupied by firms with Galician capital.
Three Galician companies topped this year's ranking for wild shrimp catches in Argentina, according to a report released by the National Undersecretariat of Fisheries. Of the top twelve spots held by the freezer and factory trawler fleet, eight belong to companies with Galician capital: Conarpesa/Wofco (4), Iberconsa (3), and Pesquera Deseado/Profand (1). In this context, the fishing industry of the Patagonian province of Chubut is cementing its undisputed leading role in the South Atlantic, while Galician companies have succeeded in placing their vessels at the top of a list highlighting the industrial groups with the highest landing volumes.

Ottawa backs Newfoundland and Labrador harvesters amid dispute
Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson said France’s proposed exploratory snow crab fishery off Newfoundland and Labrador caught her by surprise.
Global Affairs Canada is addressing the issue, which the province called “offside.” Thompson expects a resolution soon and said France has issued no new crab licences.
She says France has not issued any new snow crab licences off Newfoundland.
The province is investing $1.2 million in the NL New Harvesters Network, a three-year initiative by FFAW, PFHCB and FHSNL to promote fishing careers, training and recruitment. About one-third of certified harvesters are over 54, raising concerns over future labour shortages.

The proposed offer of NOK 161 (€14.81) per share has unanimous board support. Shareholders representing approximately 92% of AKVA’s shares, excluding treasury shares, have committed to accept, subject to customary conditions, the company said in an October 2 stock-exchange announcement.
