IFOP completed the Patagonia Norte 2026 cruise, surveying fjords and channels from Reloncaví to San Rafael. Scientists measured temperature, salinity and dissolved oxygen and collected nutrient, chlorophyll and pH samples to strengthen CHONOS and environmental monitoring.

NAFAG warns of risks to marine resources and coastal livelihoods

Ghana’s NAFAG urged the government to suspend Gold Coast GRC Ghana Ltd.’s offshore gold exploration licences covering about 10,000 km² along 300 km of coastline, pending impact assessments and consultations to protect fisheries, habitats and food security.The association, which represents five major fisheries groups, said its concerns centered on the size of the licensed area, stakeholder consultation, and the application of fisheries and environmental safeguards.

GFJK sets deadlines for gear removal and mandatory catch reporting

Greenland's GFJK has closed the northwest commercial salmon fishery.

All nets must be removed by October 9, while license holders must report catches, including zero catches, by October 23. Failure to report will prevent operators from obtaining a 2027 license.

Hokkaido harvest exceeds 80% of seasonal plan

Scallop landings in Okhotsk reached 178,578 tonnes through September, down 20% year-on-year.

Despite the decline, catches have surpassed 80% of the season’s target, with late-year supply key for Hokkaido’s frozen scallop market.

Namibia has granted an environmental clearance certificate (ECC) to the Sandpiper Marine Phosphate Project, helping the seabed mining venture clear a key regulatory hurdle.

The project aims to mine phosphate in Atlantic Ocean waters in depths of 180 to 250 meters on the continental shelf off the west coast of Namibia, and if it moves forward, it would become the first commercial phosphate mining project in the world.

SalMar harvested 105,100 tonnes of salmon in the third quarter, with disease and fish welfare considerations affecting harvesting and costs in Central Norway towards the end of the period.

Harvesting linked to infectious salmon anaemia (ISA) and fish welfare affected the Central Norway division towards quarter-end and influenced cost development, according to the company’s October 6 trading update.

SalMar did not quantify the financial impact or provide regional cost figures.
