Three different salmon conservation groups from Prince Rupert say that north coast fishermen have thrown back 1.37 million pounds of Chum Salmon - enough to fill 40 transport trucks - while rushing to catch as many Pink Salmon as they can within the 16-hour window. Regulations say that Chum Salmon have to be thrown back as quickly as possible, but fishermen who are preoccupied with the Pink Salmon are leaving the Chum the water for too long before being thrown back. The result, say the conservationists, is that many fish do not survive afterwards long enough to spawn, making the problem of depleting Chum stocks even worse.

The workshop will bring together experts in population dynamics, fisheries biology and scientific assessment to advance the development of a regional database and strengthen scientific knowledge of the abundance, productivity and exploitation status of the Illex argentinus population.
Authorities intensify crackdown on illegal foreign fishing

Two trawlers seized inside protected marine sanctuary
Authorities in Odisha detained 19 fishermen and seized 2 trawlers caught fishing illegally in Gahirmatha Marine Wildlife Sanctuary. Officials confiscated 21 nets, GPS/VHF equipment and about 40 kg of fish. Fishing is banned year-round to protect Olive Ridley turtles.
Rockall haddock returns to MSC certification after reforms have strengthened monitoring, fleet management and protection of vulnerable ecosystems
Scotland’s sustainable seafood sector has received a boost after Rockall haddock regained certification under the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) Fisheries Standard.
The fishery, located around 250 miles west of the Outer Hebrides, was originally certified in 2018 but suspended in 2022 after vessels were found to have entered protected areas containing vulnerable marine ecosystems.

Omani authorities seized a commercial vessel in the Sea of Duqm for using prohibited nets. 12 expatriate workers were detained for fishing without licences.
The vessel, illegal gear and catch were confiscated, and the case was referred for legal action.
Aquaculture drives growth as output reaches 3,739.04 MT
Davao del Sur fisheries output climbed 20.8% in Q2 2026 to 3,739.04 MT. Aquaculture, accounting for 80.4%, rose 22.8% to 3,005.83 MT, led by milkfish at 2,211.23 MT.Marine cage production jumped 30.2%, strengthening the province’s overall fisheries performance.
