IN BRIEF - The struggle of the artisanal fishermen of Aysén against the privatization of the sea

Tuesday, February 27, 2024

Fishing leaders and residents of Melinka see the Coastal Marine Spaces of Native Peoples as the only possibility to confront the salmon industry. The initiative should be resolved this February 29.
80% of the artisanal fishing workers in Aysén belong to indigenous peoples who see their source of income and the preservation of their profession threatened due to the ground that the salmon industry has been gaining in the country, as well as the threats due to the delivery from Maritorio to a future southern macrozone.
Given this situation, from Melinka, the only proposal defended by leaders and residents is the creation of Coastal Marine Spaces of Native Peoples (ECMPO). This was stated by the president of one of the independent federations of the northern fleet of artisanal fishermen of Aysén, Juan Carlos Torres, in a week where the Regional Commission for the Use of the Coastal Edge should resolve said matter this February 29.
"We have remained very attentive in all the presentations that CONADI has made, we have spoken with the communities and we have come to the conclusion that it is the only alternative we have to be able to protect the last and little that remains of the planet's seed resources," the leader said.

“We must protect the last thing that is left in the south of the world. When the 110 thousand hectares were handed over to the salmon industry by the triple A, they did not consult anyone," he added. [...]

Monday, April 22, 2024

The 8th annual meeting of the North Pacific Fisheries Commission (NPFC) was held for four days from the 15th to the 18th at the Osaka Prefectural International Conference Center.

Regarding the management of saury resources, it was agreed that from this year, for the first time, fishery management rules will be introduced to calculate the total allowable catch (TAC) according to the resource level. However, the TAC calculated from the latest resource levels is subject to fluctuations of up to 10% compared to the previous year, and in 2024 it is set at 225,000 tons, a 10% decrease from the previous year.

The conference was attended by nine member countries and regions, including Japan, Taiwan, China, and Russia. A press conference was held after the meeting.

At last year's annual meeting, the saury TAC stated that for the two years from 2023 to 2024, the amount within the treaty zone (high seas) should be kept at 150,000 tons, and within the exclusive economic zones (EEZ) of Japan and Russia, less than 100,000 tons. [....]

Other Media | WorldFishing: Can aquaculture be sited sustainably at maritime ports?

Friday, April 19, 2024

Over the years, there has been much focus on the coexistence of offshore renewable energy and aquaculture, two rapidly growing industries that share a common resource: the ocean. Bringing these two industries together has the potential to generate economic, environmental, and social benefits, while addressing multiple challenges from food scarcity to climate change.

The same could be said for aquaculture and maritime ports. As ocean-based industries continue to expand, careful spatial planning is important to reconcile existing ocean uses and manage environmental impacts effectively.
