The Global Seafood Sector Redefines Its Responsibility from the Port of Vigo

International leaders and authorities will inaugurate the IV GSSG Forum today to establish new standards for social impact and sustainability in the fishing industry.
Vigo — The Afundación Vigo Headquarters, located at 24-26 Policarpo Sanz St., will host today the opening of the fourth edition of the Galicia Global Sustainable Seafood Forum (GSSG). The event, which will formally begin at 09:30 hours, will bring together eighteen international experts with the objective of debating the responsibility and real impact of the sector in the global environment.

The official inauguration will include the participation of the Minister of the Sea, Marta Villaverde; the Mayor of Vigo, Abel Caballero; the General Secretary of Fisheries, Isabel Artime; and the President of the Nueva Pescanova Foundation, José María Benavent. This summit is a strategic initiative of the Nueva Pescanova Foundation, supported by the Ministry of the Sea of the Xunta de Galicia, the Nueva Pescanova Group, and Abanca.
.png) Management of Fishing Grounds and Value Chains Today's first working session will focus on the roadmap established by the FAO, presented by consultant Diana Fernández de la Reguera. The program highlights three fundamental goals for the industry:
"Recover and sustainably manage fishing grounds, promote responsible aquaculture, and strengthen seafood value chains."
Certification and the Value of Blue Carbon The forum will analyze key tools for transparency and climate change mitigation:

Harvest Standards: Rupert Howes, Chief Executive of the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), will analyze achievements in certified fisheries alongside leaders such as Juan Corrales Garavilla and David Carter, CEO of Austral Fisheries.

Marine Ecosystems: The role of mangroves and "blue carbon" in aquaculture production will be examined, with contributions from Simone Maridueña and Professor Gianluca Marino.

Socioeconomic Development and Marine Protection One of the main axes will be the impact of fishing on communities. Brigitte Fredericks, Mayor of Lüderitz in Namibia, will explain how the fishing industry has driven the development of her city since the 90s. This analysis will be reinforced by Professor Gonzalo Rodríguez, an expert in economic impacts from the University of Santiago.
In the field of conservation, the head of the IOC-UNESCO, Fanny Douvere, together with researcher David Díaz from the IEO-CSIC, will address the importance of Marine Protected Areas to guarantee the resilience of the oceans.
.png) Efficiency and Conclusions Today’s session will also devote a priority space to the elimination of food waste, featuring the vision of representatives from FIAB and Vegalsa-Eroski. In closing, Gerbrand Haverkamp, CEO of the World Benchmarking Alliance, will emphasize the need to:
"Align business activity with social and environmental interests, recognize responsible companies, and encourage the whole to improve."
The institutional closing, scheduled for 18:00 hours, will be led by Isaac Rosón Sánchez-Brunete, General Director of Fisheries, Aquaculture, and Technological Innovation, and the President of the Nueva Pescanova Foundation.
