Many Misunderstand Ocean Basics with Nearly One in Five Unaware of Its Size

LONDON — A large portion of the global population lacks fundamental knowledge about marine ecosystems. According to a comprehensive public opinion survey commissioned to the independent research company GlobeScan by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) —the international non-profit organization and ecolabel— almost a fifth (19%) of respondents are unaware that our planet is covered by more ocean than land. Furthermore, an alarming 34% do not know that in some places the ocean is deeper than Mount Everest is high.

The research, which surveyed a massive sample of more than 31,000 people across 23 countries, was released on World Ocean Day (8 June). Its insights highlight both a deep gap in global ocean literacy and a stark crossroads in public perception regarding the current state of fisheries and the resilience of the marine environment: while 66% correctly identified that overfishing is more widespread today than it was 50 years ago, 35% wrongly thought fish populations can never recover from overfishing, and a further 26% were unsure. This occurs amidst a high level of public concern, with 86% of people saying they are worried about the state of the ocean, citing climate change, pollution, and declining fish populations as their main anxieties.

Urgent Diagnosis: Persistent Pressures and Food Security

The release of these data coincides with the presentation of the organization's new strategic report, titled Fishing for the Future. This document highlights that, according to metrics from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), pressure on marine environments is critical: currently, 35.5% of global fish stocks are exploited at biologically unsustainable levels

This alarming level of overexploitation severely threatens the livelihood and nutrition of entire communities across the planet. At a macroeconomic and social level, the report underscores that around 33 million people are directly employed in the wild-capture sector of fishes, shellfishes, and mollusks, meaning that 7.3% of the world's population depends directly or indirectly on fisheries for their livelihood. In terms of food consumption, it is estimated that at least 3.2 billion people obtain 20% of their daily animal protein intake from marine products.

In contrast to the widespread belief held by a third of the public (35%) that damage from overfishing is irreversible, the report counterposes solid arguments backed by rigorous scientific evidence demonstrating that, through strict and science-based management, marine ecosystems possess a remarkable capacity for regeneration:

• Iberian sardine (Sardina pilchardus): Following a deep biological crisis, Portuguese and Spanish fishers worked together under a new joint management plan. By 2025, scientific assessments confirmed that the population of adult sardines was almost four times larger than it was during the historic lows documented in 2015.

• East Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus): Close to commercial collapse at the end of the 20th century, this iconic species was subjected to a comprehensive international rebuilding plan that enforced strict quotas and rules for targeting countries. Today, the biomass of this stock has recovered to its highest level since the 1960s.

• Cornish hake (Merluccius merluccius): A species popular in the UK and European markets that was overexploited and declined in the early 1990s. Sustainable management, combined with technical changes in fishing gear —such as introducing larger mesh sizes in gillnets to allow juveniles to escape— helped rebuild the stock, generating a 300% increase in spawning biomass since 1998. Currently, a small fleet of 9 vessels in the coastal town of Newlyn safely lands nearly 2,000 tonnes of this species annually.

The Certification Program in Figures and Future Investments

Currently, fisheries engaged in the MSC sustainability standard certification program represent 20.6% of all global wild marine catch, encompassing a total of 738 active fisheries. Over the past three years, this group of certified fisheries has successfully completed a total of 213 operational and institutional improvements directly aimed at optimizing the biomass status of commercial species and refining harvest strategies.

Technical analysis by species shows that sustainable management is highly effective when applied at a large commercial scale. According to analyzed records, 99% of global tuna landings and 85% of Alaska pollock catches currently come from stocks that do not suffer from overfishing issues.

However, critical asymmetries persist in complex regions with limited institutional resources, such as the coastlines of developing economies or the Mediterranean and Black Seas, where more than half (52%) of assessed stocks remain overexploited. To address these disparities, the MSC's Ocean Stewardship Fund —which is funded by directing 5% of the annual royalties received from the commercial use of its ecolabel— has awarded £1,000,000 (one million pounds sterling), equivalent to approximately US$ 1,260,000, in scientific grants globally for the current 2026 cycle.
