The Ministry of Production (Produce) decided to extend the first anchovy (Engraulis ringens) and white anchovy (Anchoa nasus) fishing season, authorised until 31 July 2010, while not reaching the total allowable catch limits.
The new ministerial resolution issued for this purpose refers to the Legislative Decree No. 1084, establishing a management system based on the allocation of catch limits applied to the collection of both species for direct human consumption (DHC) in the north-central region.
The Minister recalled that through Ministerial Resolution No. 547-2009 the start of the first fishing season was authorised for anchovy and white anchovy in the area between latitude 16 ° 00'00'' South and the southern-most area Peru for the period between January to June 2010.
He also indicated that Produce has the power to enlarge or shrink the area depending on environmental conditions and on the recommendation of the experts of the Peruvian Maretime Institute (IMARPE).
Last 25 June, IMARPE reported that during the first season of fishing in this area, a volume equivalent to 55 per cent of the maximum allowable catch (LMTCP) was taken. Therefore, the agency scientists estimate that extending the season is possible because it will not have an impact on the availability of southern anchovy stock.
However, they clarified that the total catch in 2010 should not exceed 850,000 tonnes, reports Andina.
According to the latest Statistical Bulletin prepared by Produce, in April 47,400 tonnes of anchovy were landed, 94.3 per cent less than in the same month of 2009 when 821,300 tonnes were landed.
Meanwhile, between January and April this year, 387,300 tonnes of anchovy were landed, 59.6 per cent less than the same quarter of 2009.
The head of Produce, Jose Nicanor Gonzales, said that by June 2011, anchovy for DHC will grow from 2 to 3.5 kilograms per person, thanks to the management and the automation of industrial fishing.
