Representatives of the Ecuadorian tuna sector were informed in Manta by the Foreign Trade Minister, Juan Carlos Cassinelli, and the Vice President of the Republic, Jorge Glas, on the benefits of the country's adhesion to the Multiparty Trade Agreement with the European Union (EU) .
The Vice-president described the agreement as positive and favourable, since tuna sectors would pay 24 per cent of the tariff from January, while now the tariff will be zero.
"Almost 60 per cent of Ecuadorian tuna exports is directed to the European Union, which will generate around 100,000 jobs in this industry, and approximately 600,000 direct and indirect jobs related to all Ecuadorian exports," Glas said.
For his part, Minister Cassinelli explained the attendees that this week will be crucial for the country, since the European Parliament's work agenda includes the ratification of the Multiparty Agreement of the protocol of Ecuador’s adhesion, and on December 15 the voting session will take place, reported El Telégrafo.
He also said that they are working on the construction of the Ecuadorian Tuna Sector Brand, which aims at the international differentiation of this product.
"This brand will represent declared and regulated legal fishing, guaranteed traceability from the sea to the table and social responsibility," stressed Cassinelli.
Vice President Glas also confirmed that the trade agreement allows Ecuador to export USD 2.7 billion with a favourable balance of USD 400 million for the Ecuadorian economy.
