The government of Chubut, through its Fisheries Secretariat, formally requested the Federal Fisheries Council to intervene in the San Jorge Gulf.

The request seeks to regulate the decisions of the Santa Cruz government in relation to fishing for shrimp, as reported by Karina Fernandez in Revista Puerto.

Because the Gulf Agreement, which regulated fishing activity in the area, was not renewed, Chubut requests the intervention of the enforcement authority. Chubut's Secretary of Fisheries, Andrés Arbeleche (in the pictue), said that while respecting the provinces' autonomy in the management of natural resources, the current situation warrants national intervention to protect the resource.

Arbeleche noted that, "according to Article 5, Section C of the Federal Fisheries Law, the Federal Fisheries Council is empowered to limit access to fishing in specific maritime areas when there is a national interest in conserving a species, based on scientific evidence. In this regard, a scientific report on the situation of shrimp in the San Jorge Gulf was requested from INIDEP (National Institute for Fisheries Research and Development)".

Chubut's note also requests increased compensation for provinces that refrain from fishing within the Gulf, citing concerns about juvenile captures. Arbeleche argues that the current compensation is insufficient due to the significant increase in available biomass.

This compensation request aligns Chubut with the governor of Santa Cruz, who is also lobbying the Federal Fisheries Council for similar terms. The Minister of Production of Santa Cruz, Gustavo Martínez, stated that they have spoken with Chubut, whose officials understand the need to carry out surveys in their waters.

The Federal Fisheries Council is now responsible for evaluating the situation and making a decision.
