The fishing docks of Puerto Madryn have surpassed their own record for squid landings. With partial data from the first half of March 2025, more tons have already been unloaded than in all of 2024, which had been the historic record, as reported by Nelson Saldivia of Parte de Pesca.

As of March 18, 2025, Illex squid landings are recorded at 42,261 tons, representing 50% of the total national landings. Considering that, in the middle of the season and with the fleet operating, 84,408 tons have been caught, as confirmed by PARTE DE PESCA.

Surpasses Its Own Record

The official statistics clearly reveal the sustained growth experienced by the port of Puerto Madryn in Illex argentinus landing volumes.

A review of the last decade's data confirms this. In 2015, the docks of Golfo Nuevo recorded squid landings of 10,759 tons; in 2016, it fell to 5,663 tons. From 2017 onwards, a gradual increase was verified, reaching 12,637 tons that year.

In 2018, Madryn received 17,259 tons of squid. The information is completed with 18,448 tons in 2019; 25,587 tons in 2020; 23,284 tons in 2021; 37,497 tons in 2022 and 33,132 tons in 2023. Last year marked a record with 39,723 tons.

In just two and a half months of 2025, that record was surpassed with 42,261 tons unloaded in Puerto Madryn, according to the National Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries.

Improvements in Efficiency

The head of the Puerto Madryn Port Administration, Lic. Diego Pérez, attributed this sustained growth in fishing landings to the synergy between the private sector, the labor sector, and the State.

Pérez highlighted the improvements in unloading times, which attracted shipowners to the docks of Madryn, reducing waiting times and streamlining operations.

"It is a pride to have these increasing levels of landings and it demands a greater commitment from us," Pérez said.

"In Chubut, social peace is guaranteed, a decisive factor for those who choose where to enter their ships," evaluated the port administrator.

Pérez indicated that, in response to the squid sector's demand for similar parameters to those of frozen shrimp unloading, the stevedoring invested in belts to speed up unloading, and the SUPA union collaborated on these improvements.

Frequency of Container Ship Arrivals

The unloading speed and the social peace offered by the Madryn port favor the arrival of ships and the concentration of landings in this port.

"We have a governor like Ignacio Torres who understands the importance of the fishing industry," he stressed.

Work is underway to increase the frequency of container ship arrivals to manage available cargo volumes.

"Today we have a container deficit, especially in high season, and 'dry van' cargo of wool or aluminum ingots that need to export from here," he emphasized, seeking alternatives to avoid land transport to other ports.
