Sardine displaces Tuna as the most consumed seafood product in Mexico

Authorities reported that national sardine production registered an increase of 21.4 percent in 2023 and is the fishery with the highest production.

At the end of 2023, the sardine was positioned as the fishing product with the greatest increase in national production, reaching a volume of 771,015 tons, reported the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

.png) In Mexico, sardines are one of the most consumed seafood products, with 4.5 kilograms per capita. This exceeds the intake of other species, such as tuna, shrimp, mojarra and octopus.
According to the publication Agri-Food Expectations 2024, prepared by the Agri-Food and Fisheries Information Service (SIAP), the catch represented 21.4 percent more compared to the previous year.
The federal agency noted that the value of sardines, a species closely related to anchovies and herring, was 1,542 million pesos, that is, 4.0 percent higher than in 2022.

He pointed out that this fish has become one of the foods most in demand by the population, due to its affordable cost, flavor, aroma and nutritional contribution. Furthermore, the high potential of the production chain allows the sales centers to be supplied throughout the year, although April to June and the month of November are the periods of greatest production.
The Ministry of Agriculture pointed out that Sonora, a leader in fishing production at the national level, is in the first capture site, with 390,951 tons, a volume that represented half of Mexican production. He even pointed out that the catch grew 50.8 percent in contrast to 2022, when 259,210 tons were recorded.

He specified that Sonora, Baja California, Sinaloa and Baja California Sur, states located around the Gulf of California, produced 99.8 percent of the total production.
Baja California contributed 183,388 tons, Sinaloa contributed 114,371 tons and Baja California Sur added 80,842 tons at the end of last year, he stated.
