Aquafeed Giant Details Progress on Emissions, Antibiotic Use, and Industry Certifications
STAVANGER – Skretting, one of the world's largest aquafeed producers, has released its 2024 Impact Report, detailing significant progress across its global operations and marking the launch of its new sustainability value proposition, ACT. The company is on an ambitious path to safely, healthily, and sustainably feed nearly 10 billion people by 2050.
The report acknowledges that a major challenge facing the industry in 2024 was maintaining its social license. In response, Skretting aims to publish its most transparent report annually, celebrating achievements while honestly reflecting on areas for improvement.
"At Skretting, we are committed to being the absolute best at innovation, customer intimacy, and sustainability. Our achievements in 2024 show that we are serious about leading in these areas. I am proud of what we have accomplished together," stated Bastiaan van Tilburg, CEO of Skretting.
Tangible Progress Across Key Metrics
The 2024 report highlights concrete advancements in various sustainability areas. Skretting achieved significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions compared to its 2018 baseline: Scope 1 and 2 emissions decreased by 34.9%, and Scope 3 emissions saw a 10.2% reduction. Concurrently, the average carbon footprint per tonne of feed was reduced by 26%. The report provides detailed emission figures for all business units, with granular data for each country in its salmon operations (Australia, Chile, North America, and Norway).

Transparency extends to Skretting's use of antibiotics. The company reported a 5% decrease in the use of critically important antimicrobials for human medicine (CIA) and a 53% decrease in the use of non-CIA since 2021. The percentage of total feed containing antibiotics fell from 1.6% in 2023 to 1.4% in 2024. Progress was also made in the use of certified marine ingredients, increasing from 77% in 2023 to 85% in 2024.

Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) remains a priority for Skretting, with women holding 27% of all senior leadership positions in 2024. A dedicated D&I Council actively promotes inclusivity, supporting feedback culture and advancing equality, particularly among less visible and more vulnerable members of the Skretting community.
An Eventful Year Focused on Sustainability
The past year saw key developments supporting Skretting's sustainability agenda. Nutreco, Skretting’s parent company, celebrated the opening of its Garden of the Future in Thurgau, Switzerland. This facility develops proprietary plant ingredients, called PhytoComplexes, which are being incorporated into Skretting feeds to create innovative solutions addressing pressing health challenges for fish and shrimp.

Recognizing the industry's urgent need for alternative sources of EPA and DHA, Skretting developed a Novel Ingredient Matrix to evaluate suppliers based on three crucial criteria: sustainability, ingredient performance, and supplier capabilities.
In a continued commitment to responsible sourcing, seven of Skretting’s factories achieved ASC Feed Certification. These facilities are pioneering this standard within the salmon industry, as well as in the EU, Ecuador, and Japan, adhering to strict requirements for traceability, environmental sustainability, and and social responsibility.

Introducing ACT: Co-creating Sustainable Solutions
To drive meaningful change and create long-term value, Skretting has launched its new sustainability value proposition, ACT, alongside the 2024 Impact Report. ACT stands for:
- Action: Doing what matters most and with impact.
- Connection: Involving the right stakeholders to accelerate change.
- Transparency: Being a trusted advisor and providing the right information.
ACT was developed with Skretting customers in mind, aiming to help them achieve their sustainability ambitions in their respective markets. Through this proposition, Skretting seeks to lead the co-creation of sustainable solutions that benefit suppliers, farmers, and the entire industry.

A Commitment for Generations to Come
"Our purpose is Feeding the Future, and in 2024 we contributed to 24 million portions of seafood meals per day around the world. However, we need to do more to help the industry reach its full growth potential. If we don’t deliver on this, global food security will be in jeopardy," said Mr. van Tilburg. "That’s why we invite our partners in the industry to embrace long-term thinking and collaboration to secure investment, innovation and progress in sustainability. We commit that, together with the teams in all our regions, Skretting will play a leading role and help aquaculture reach its full potential."
