Trident Seafoods fined with over USD 37,000 for wastewater breaches

Seattle-based seafood company Trident Seafoods Corp. will have to pay a fine amounting to USD 37,400 for wastewater violations to residual water regulations at its Newport surimi factory.

This is the second time in the past year that the Oregon state Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) has fined the company for violations at the facility, which also includes a fishmeal factory.

Trident Seafoods holds federal permits to collect, treat, control and eliminate residual water and to discharge treated fish processing wastewater in two facilities in Newport, including the surimi plant located in Yaquina Bay Boulevard. 

This time, DEQ has detected that firm failed to monitor wastewater again and it exceeded the daily maximum and monthly average permitted pollution limits at the surimi plant.

DEQ cited Trident for 26 violations of daily and monthly average effluent limits for biochemical oxygen demand, total suspended solids, and oil and grease.

According to the state entity, the company was cited for exceeding limits for biochemical oxygen demand at least eight times, by amounts ranging from 17 percent to 150 percent over limits.

“These limits are set to protect aquatic life and human health,” DEQ wrote in its penalty assessment. “Compliance with the permit terms is essential to protecting the quality of our public waters.”

Trident Seafoods has until May 11 to appeal the fine.
