Largest British foodservice provider joins Sustainable Seafood Coalition
(UNITED KINGDOM, 7/27/2017)
The United Kingdom’s largest foodservice company has joined the Sustainable Seafood Coalition (SSC) and has committed to using responsibly sourced fish across its business.
Through the initiative, Compass UK & Ireland joins retailers and brands like Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Birds Eye UK.
“Having Compass Group UK & Ireland join the SSC is fantastic as more people across the UK will be eating responsibly sourced fish. Compass is leading the way for other major foodservice businesses to step up their public commitments to seafood sustainability,” pointed out SSC coordinator Katie Miller.
North Sea cod was certified as sustainable for the first time in 20 years last week, after improved management practices and business investment helped save stocks from total collapse. But some fish stocks, like seabass, are still at risk in the waters surrounding the UK. Responsible sourcing practices need to be part of the solution.
By joining the SSC, businesses must commit to two voluntary codes of conduct that ensure environmentally responsible sourcing of fish and harmonised labelling on all seafood products. This gives consumers confidence that the seafood they are buying is sustainable and labelled with accurate information.
Compass works behind the scenes at sports events and military bases, and in the heart of schools, hospitals and care homes – some 15,000 locations across the UK and Ireland.
“We’re proud to now be members of the Sustainable Seafood Coalition and extend our dedication to only using fish that is sourced responsibly across our business,” stressed Head of Corporate Responsibility at Compass Group UK & Ireland, Duncan Gray.
