Ecuadorian shrimp returns to Brazil, after 19 years of absence

The arrival in Brazil of a container loaded with 10,000 kilograms of Ecuadorian shrimp marks a historic milestone in bilateral trade, since this product did not reach the Brazilian market since 1999.

The shipment was made by the company Santa Priscilla, and arrived in the port of Santos the first week of February.

The cargo met all the entry requirements demanded by the Brazilian health authorities and was successfully landed on February 16 at the facilities of Mar & Rio Pescados, the company that bought the product and is located in São José do Rio Preto, 15 hours from São Paulo.

The commercial office of the Institute of Export and Investment Promotion (Pro Ecuador) in Brazil reported that the importing company expressed its satisfaction with the quality of the Ecuadorian shrimp, noting that it is preparing to make an upcoming purchase of 25,000 kilos.

It should be noted that the entry of Ecuadorian shrimp to Brazil was released on August 15, 2017, through the decision of Judge Kassio Nunes Marques, who dismissed the objections of the Brazilian Shrimp Farmers Association (ABCC).

This achievement was achieved through joint work between Pro Ecuador, the National Chamber of Aquaculture of Ecuador (CNA), the Embassy of Ecuador in Brasilia and the Ministry of Commerce and Investment (MCEI), institutions that through various actions and procedures technicians, demonstrated before the Ministry of Agriculture and Supply of Brazil (MAPA) the quality, health and good practices of Ecuadorian shrimp production.

Pro Ecuador states that Brazil opened the market for headless, peeled and frozen shrimp, so the product from Ecuador can only enter these types of formats at this time. However, as the product is positioned in the market, the exportable supply can be extended to presentations such as cooked shrimp or other needs demanded by the Brazilian consumer.
