Fresh report on copper from aquaculture facilities
(NORWAY, 1/30/2023)
The Directorate of Fisheries is concerned about the effect copper used in the aquaculture industry has on the environment. The new report concludes, among other things, that the emissions from aquaculture facilities are of such a magnitude that the researchers at the Institute of Marine Research expect negative effects on organisms around the facilities.
A report was therefore ordered from the Institute of Marine Research, which has now been received and published.

Maps localities with high copper concentrations
The Directorate of Fisheries has worked in parallel to obtain a complete overview of localities with high concentrations of copper in the sediment, as well as to obtain an overview of localities where measurements of copper in the sediment are missing.

The blue line at 20 mg/kg marks the limit for condition class 1 (background) and condition class II (good). The green line at 84 mg/kg marks the boundary between Condition Class II (Good) and Condition Class III Moderate and IV (Poor). (*) indicates significant change, p< 0.05. These locations will be followed up further. In the first instance, this is done by issuing an order to measure copper (after prior notice) in locations where no such measurements have previously been carried out in the sediment.
