Shrimp aquaculture: Financing to strengthen the electrical grid
(ECUADOR, 9/18/2023)
Approximately 55,000 hectares of shrimp farming throughout the country will be able to be electrified once the government manages to expand the electrical network to productive areas of Esmeraldas, Manabí, Guayas, El Oro and Santa Elena. This important step was taken after the signing of the agreement between the Minister of Economy, Pablo Arosemena, and the president of the Development Bank of Latin America (CAF), Sergio Diaz Granados, in Spain. In which the $200 million credit was approved for the shrimp electrification program.

It is good news for the sector since the project has been more than 4 years late since its official announcement in July 2019, during the Government of President Lenin Moreno. However, in the current government, the President of the Republic Guillermo Lasso, announced that it was a priority in 2023, becoming one of the Executive's commitments to boost the competitiveness of the sector, after the elimination of the differentiated price of diesel for the shrimp activity.
For José Antonio Camposano, Executive President of the National Chamber of Aquaculture, this achievement is key to promoting the industry, however, it must be complemented with other measures.
Promoting shrimp electrification will allow a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and toxic pollutants. Additionally, this transition promotes the preservation of aquatic ecosystems, greater energy efficiency, and significant long-term savings. On the other hand, it also aligns with international sustainability standards, conserves water resources and promotes innovation, preparing the sector for a more sustainable and economically stable future.
The National Chamber of Aquaculture, in close collaboration with the private sector, will persist in its efforts to materialize this momentous achievement for the aquaculture industry. The adoption of clean energy sources not only represents an astute strategy from an economic and operational perspective, but also reaffirms the position of the shrimp sector as a vanguard in sustainability.

This commitment to sustainability reflects the future vision of the aquaculture industry, recognizing the importance of environmentally friendly practices. Furthermore, by adopting measures that favor the use of clean energy, the industry will not only benefit at an operational and financial level, but will also gain the recognition and trust of global markets that are increasingly aware of the importance of sustainability.
