PRODUCE Lifts Ban and Sets 74-Ton Limit for Scallop Catch in 2024
(PERU, 4/2/2024)
The Ministry of Production (PRODUCE) has announced, through Resolución Ministerial N.° 000085-2024, the lifting of the ban on the extraction of the fan shell resource (Argopecten purpuratus) in the natural banks of the Callao Region.
This measure, effective from 00:00 on the day following the publication of the resolution, allows the resumption of extractive activity, as well as the transportation, marketing, storage and processing of the aforementioned resource.

As a result of this survey, PRODUCE has established the maximum allowable catch limit for the fan shell at 74 tons during the year 2024. This limit will apply to specimens with sizes greater than 65 mm in valve height.
The extractive activity concludes when the quota is reached, upon recommendation of the Instituto del Mar del Perú - IMARPE for environmental or biological reasons, or no later than May 31, 2024.

Participating artisanal fishermen are reminded that they must have a valid fishing permit and comply with established fishing, environmental and health regulations. Furthermore, the landing of the resource can only be carried out at the points authorized by the General Directorate of Supervision, Inspection and Sanction of PRODUCE.
The lifting of the ban on fan shell, an important benthic resource, represents an opportunity to reactivate fishing in the region. This measure seeks to boost the local economy, and achieve a balance between the sustainable use of the resource and the preservation of the marine environment.
