SOMU blocks exports from firms in Mar del Plata
(ARGENTINA, 8/21/2013)
Representatives of the Maritime Workers Union (SOMU) and the Association of Coastal Fishing Boats were summoned by the Ministry of Labour of the Nation to a meeting scheduled for Thursday to address the conflict caused by the interruption of exports from eight local businesses.
The fishing industry considers the measure blocking the exit of the containers from eight firms is "irrational," Pescare reported.
The estimated value of this charge is USD 1 million.
The affected fish firms are Ardapez, Arhepez, Pequimar SA, Univpesca, Pesquera Universal, Pampa Fish, Coomarpes and Argepez.
SOMU claims an alleged debt to the Association of Coastal Fishing Vessels, and to press its payment, it decided to block foreign shipments of the loads, mainly of sea bass.
Moreover, today the authorities of the Refrigerators Exporters Chamber (Cafrexport), which brings together four of the firms involved indirectly with more than 50 containers waiting to be sent abroad, are expected to be present at the Ministry.
It is still unknown whether the Deputy Minister of Labour, Naomi Rial, will intervene to try to solve the conflict.
From the Association it is ensured that the owners do not register debts with the SOMU and that they have met the collective bargaining agreement signed in May with the seamanship.
"We are extremely concerned about this situation. Some companies are forced to stop producing next week," Ciro D'Antonio, president of Cafrexport, told La capital.
"This is a conflict that must be resolved by themselves without coercing the companies in the middle," he added.
