Alltech sets up the country’s first algae factory

The multinational firm Alltech has begun construction of an algae production plthe first Brazilian algae plant. Result of an investment of BRL 140 million (USD 62.8 million), this project was born following the extension of the yeast plant in San Pedro de Ivaí, Paraná, in the northwest region.

During the opening ceremony, the State Secretary of Industry, Commerce and Affairs of Mercosur, Horacio Monteschio highlighted the trust of the world’s leading firm in natural animal nutrition in expanding investments in the Brazilian state.

The investment in the algae plant is essential for the municipality of San Pedro de Ivaí and the region.

"We will work together to benefit the unity and to create the conditions for other investments to take place in Paraná," the official pointed out.

"Paraná agribusiness is increasingly standing out due to the innovative potential and the importance in the human, economic and social development of the inner areas of the country," he added.

For his part, Alltech Vice President for Latin America, Guilherme Minozzo, stressed that "algae production is strategic and reaches Brazilian markets and more than 80 countries."

In addition, he said that the fermentation of algae is among the sources of food and the renewable energy in the world, and plays an important role in health and nutrition.

On the other hand, Mark Lyons, son of Alltech's Pearse Lyons owner, stressed that the company has been in the market for over three decades, and has manufacturing plants and hundreds of subsidiaries located across 128 countries.

Lyons ensured that between 7 per cent and 10 per cent of the global turnover of the company is invested in innovation, according to the Government of Paraná reported.

Algae are divided into autotrophic and heterotrophic. The former needs the sun to perform the photosynthesis process while the latter one uses oxygen from the environment to develop and reproduce, without the need for light. Alltech uses heterotrophic algae, which can be easily grown in a controlled environment, without contacting the open air, avoiding possible contamination.

"Brazil is currently the second Alltech’s largest market. Why not be the first?" wondered Lyons regarding the future and opportunities of the country.

"People want something different and algae are key pieces to conquer new markets. The future of nutrition is found in functional foods and we are trying to make a difference," he concluded.
