Public-private partnership to enhance salmon farming
(CHILE, 2/2/2015)
The Production Development Corporation (CORFO) coordinates a public-private initiative to promote innovation, to position Chile as a world leader in the salmon industry and production sustainability.
This programme, ‘Patagonian Sustainable Salmon', brings together the salmon farming industry in La Araucania, Los Lagos, Aysen and Magallanes regions and is part of the measures set out in the Agenda for Productivity, Innovation and Growth driven by national government.
According to Eduardo Bitran, executive vice president of CORFO, one of the main objectives of the programme is to "increase the value of Chilean salmon in international markets, based on the sustainability of processes, safety, certifiable high quality and strong technological diversification."
"What ultimately should lead to greater productivity and competitive development of the salmon industry in Chile," the official added.
In the last 20 years, Chile has established itself as the leading producer of trout, and farmed salmon in second place. Salmonid exports represent on average USD 3.5 billion, and reach to more than 60 markets.
However, the salmon industry showed weaknesses in 2007, when an outbreak of infectious salmon anaemia (ISA) caused a production drop of 40 per cent and salmon exports were down by 50 per cent.
Having overcome labour, health and economic crisis resulting from this problem, the industry faces a promising outlook. CORFO explains that this is because the market is expanding due to the increasing demand for healthy food protein and high-quality seafood from emerging economies such as China, India and other Southeast Asian countries.
In the coming months, it is expected that the Patagonian Sustainable Salmon programme will conduct a survey of gaps and develop a roadmap to create the necessary initiatives to develop the expected challenges.
Between 2004 and 2013, domestic production of salmon and trout grew 49 per cent, totalling 527,770 net tonnes.
