Intesal confirms dinoflagellate presence near Gulf of Penas
(CHILE, 2/15/2017)
After the event of fish mortality recorded a few weeks ago, while they were being transported on wellboats in the area of the Gulf of Penas, SalmonChile's Salmon Technological Institute (Intesal) carried out a sampling on the Puerto Montt - Puerto Natales route. The objective was to obtain samples of the area where these mortalities occurred, because of a harmful algal bloom (HAB).
Intesal reported that the results of this sampling, conducted between 10 and 13 February, and antecedents associated with the recent publication of Executive Resolution 510/17, of the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service (Sernapesca), which establishes a plague emergency, confirm the presence of Karenia sp. dinoflagellate in areas near the Gulf of Penas, in maximum abundances of 133 cells/ml. According to the literature, the level described for fish larva mortalities is 40 cells/ml.
The extraordinary measures implemented by Sernapesca establish a containment area, where vessels will have to navigate without making water changes and the obligation of daily sampling and report of harmful alga alerts for all other centres located within the polygon.
For the moment, this event is limited to sectors of oceanic areas and does not represent a risk for the production centres located in interior channels of the Region of Aysen or Magallanes.
Intesal is also collaborating with the oceanographic cruise that Sernapesca is coordinating, together with the Maritime Authority, the INCAR and IFOP of Punta Arenas, in order to continue evaluating the future conditions of this finding.
