Environmental assessment of controversial Grieg salmon project advances
(CANADA, 1/5/2018)
As the environmental assessment process of the aquaculture project that Grieg NL intends to develop in Placentia Bay progresses, the Government of Terranova and Labrador is inviting interested parties to express their opinion on the new guidelines that the aquaculture company should comply with.
The environmental commission of the provincial Department of Municipal Affairs and Environment wants to know the public`s response on the draft of the requirements that Grieg should meet in his presentation of the environmental impact statement (EIS).
Last November, the provincial environment minister, Eddie Joyce, announced that the company should present an environmental impact statement as part of the Ministry's environmental assessment.
The EIS guidelines draft specifies the details that should be addressed by aquaculture companies, from the procedures and equipment available for the management of fish escapes, to the plans for the dismantling of the sites.
These guidelines can be consulted on the Department of Municipal Affairs and the Environment website, and interested parties have until February 11 to send their comments and / or opinions.
If the controversial aquaculture project is finally approved by the authorities of Terranova and Labrador, Grieg will be able to build a new hatchery in Marystown and install marine cages for farming operations in 12 locations.
