Scientists seek to boost the shrimp farming industry
(PHILIPPINES, 1/5/2018)
Scientists of the Aquaculture Department of the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC/AQD) will carry out a research-based program called the ‘Oplan Balik Sugpo’ to improve shrimp farming and boost this industry.
Some time ago, this sector reached significant income from its exports, mainly to Japan, but its production suffered a sharp drop in the 1990s due to the appearance of diseases.
Scientists at the Fish Health Section of the department are working on new technologies to immediately detect prawn disease. They are also developing a culture technique that will consider factors like temperature, photo period, bird migration and season, the Philipine Information Agency (PIA) informed.
“These factors can enhance growth of pathogens so the scientists are developing efficient and effective use of probiotics as priorities,” said Dan Baliao, SEAFDEC Aquaculture Department Chief.
On the other hand, the Shrimp Brood stock Development Team is working on a brood stock selection scheme and on the improvement of protocols concerning quarantine and biosecurity measures.
Furthermores, the Nutrition and Feed Development Team scientists are carrying out tests to implement low cost diet to reduce production cost by using alternative local feed ingredients. For some time, finding an optimal diet for shrimp has been one of the fish farmers and pond operators main concerns.
SEAFDEC/AQD representatives assure that, despite the high production costs, there is the possibility of obtaining large profits if this industry can be revived and made competitive worldwide.
