Alltech closes algae production plant in Winchester
(UNITED STATES, 1/30/2018)
Alltech Algae announced the imminent closure of its facility in Winchester, Kentucky. This algae production plant is one of the largest in the world and is also an important research center.
After the announcement, spokeswoman Susanna Elliott highlighted that the plant “has served as a pilot plant for industry-changing innovations in animal nutrition that we plan to continue to drive forward.”
“However, with our continued commitment to operational excellence and efficiency, we feel the need to move to a more flexible, less constrained production arrangement for algae. As such we are ceasing production at the Alltech Algae facility in Winchester,” she added.
The biotechnology plant´s closure does not produce a commercial impact, as the company will continue producing algae “somewhere else”, as Elliott said.
Furthermore, the plant´s authorities assured its employees will be provided “with a platform for successful transition into new roles either at Alltech or elsewhere.”
Winchester Mayor Ed Burtner and Todd Denham, director of the Winchester Industrial Development Authority, met with company authorities a year ago and was told Alltech was going to reduce its operations at the facility.
Alltech purchased the facility in September 2010 from Martek Bioscience, which specialized in algae fermentation.
Alltech officially opened in April 2011 and continued fermenting algae for aquaculture and for use in animal feed.
