Verifik8 is a digital transparency and traceability solution for any food system.

Verifik8 Tracks, Manages and Displays Social and Environmental Data on Seafood Operations

  (THAILAND, 7/10/2018)

The seafood industry has one of the most complicated supply chains in the world, with sometimes up to seven companies involved from catch to plate, each keeping records on paper in long distance locations. In fisheries, traceability is defined as the ability to track the source of seafood, the conditions under which it is farmed or caught, and the intermediaries it passes through. Improving traceability is critical to promoting sustainability in both aquaculture and wild-caught fish.

Verifik8 is a technology and market-driven solution to monitor and verify social and environmental performances in the agribusiness supply chain. Verifik8 currently focus on sustainable aquaculture and sugarcane production in Thailand, but it is looking to expand into other South-East Asian countries and into other commodities.

Verifik8 is an integrated data analytic platform to monitor and verify your supply chain.

The idea that grew in to VerifiK8 essentially sought to use smartphones as an industry-centered tool in which buyers can seek to validate their business to their customers. This way they don’t solely have to depend on an auditor to verify their business, using time and money on complex certifications. By providing the industry with the right tools, VerifiK8 can help buyers show to the world that they are doing business in an environmentally and socially sustainable way, while also fostering improvements in production practices at a low cost.

Verifik8 helps to build trust between farmers and buyers.

The solution improves transparency and make procurements safer, while enhancing producers compliance to international sustainability standards. It reflect in secured access to market and secured livelihoods.

Verifik8 is now implementing the solution with a range of organic aquaculture shrimp farms in Thailand, with extension in Indonesia as part of the Southeast Asia Shrimp Improvement Protocol (SEASAIP).

Verifik8 currently focus on sustainable aquaculture and sugarcane production in Thailand, but it is looking to expand into other South-East Asian countries and into other commodities.

Verifik8 makes producers comply to regulatory pressure from importing markets, meet the costumers' demand for responsible sourcing and identify the environmental and social risks in its supply chain. The software connects producers and buyers through mobile-based data collection and data monitoring for visible compliance in order to build trust across the supply chain. Verifik8 ultimately allows smaller operators to compete in global supply chains without requiring expensive systems of their own.

Emmanuelle Bourgois, Verifik8 Founder & Director says: “We have both a green VerifiK8 for agriculture and a blue VerifiK8 for aquaculture. For each of these industries we identify various commodities and use experts to develop a matrix with relevant data points that need to be measured in order to evaluate environmental and social sustainability. We believe that the environmental and the social aspects mutually help each other”.

 Emmanuelle Bourgois.

“In terms of how our technology works, we have a web-based application where each of the farmers have a profile. On this profile, the farmers upload commodity-dependent data daily during the crop season. This way, we basically monitor the production in the most user-friendly way possible. To make it even easier, we are currently developing a mobile application where farmers will input data and download information even where they don’t have mobile coverage. From the information provided to us, we develop a dashboard which is readily accessible to various supply chain stakeholders like buyers, sellers, input companies etc. In the short term, our technology cross checks and validates information, adds intelligence, and provides valuable information for both farmers and stakeholders. The cost is shared by the various stakeholders that have an interest in knowing more about the farmers and the standards they adopt”, she added.
