Aquaculture Feed Prices Surge Following Fishmeal Supply Collapse

Friday, August 07, 2026, 00:10 (GMT + 9)

Chinese feed manufacturers enforce price hikes of up to 1,500 yuan per ton and begin rationing fishmeal in formulations due to shortages of imported Peruvian raw material.

The aquaculture market in China is facing severe operational tensions due to historic cost increases in imported raw materials. The indefinite closure of anchovy (Engraulis ringens) fishing in central and northern Peru—triggered by a lack of resource availability confirmed by Production Minister Quispe—has directly impacted the supply chain in the Asian giant.

In China's domestic import market, supply shortages pushed Peruvian super steam fishmeal to record prices of between 23,400 yuan (US$ 3,236.51) and 24,000 yuan (US$ 3,319.50) per ton. The gap between theoretical import costs and domestic values already exceeds 1,000 yuan (US$ 138.31), driven by an international CNF reference price that reached US$ 3,700 per ton (reflecting a cumulative increase of US$ 1,550 per ton so far this year).

This cost pressure forced major feed companies in China to pass price increases on to producers. Between July 25 and August 1, major groups including Haid Group, Tongwei, and Dabeinong implemented price adjustments ranging from 100 yuan (US$ 13.83) to 1,500 yuan (US$ 207.47) per ton.

The price hikes directly affect the regions of East China, Central China, and Southwest China, impacting feed formulated for key commercial species such as California bass (Micropterus salmoides), yellow catfish (Pelteobagrus fulvidraco), snakehead fish (Channa argus), bream (Abramis brama), sturgeon (Acipenseridae), frogs, and specialized fish fry.

As an emergency response to historically high prices, numerous Chinese manufacturing plants have begun reducing the proportion of fishmeal in their commercial formulations, a last-resort measure expected to significantly alter global consumption volumes of the ingredient over the coming months.
