Norwegian Seafood Seminar introduces new products: farmed cod, tuna

  (JAPAN, 6/11/2024)

The Japan-Norway Seafood Seminar 2024 (hosted by the Norwegian Seafood Council, with support from the Fisheries Section of the Norwegian Embassy and the Japan Fisheries Association) was held on the 6th at the Hotel Okura in Toranomon, Tokyo, with the attendance of Marianne Naess, Minister of Fisheries and Maritime Policy, who was visiting Japan.

The main focus was on mackerel, for which negotiations for new quotas with coastal countries are in the final stages, but the current status of fish species that are expected to be new export commodities for Norway, such as farmed cod and bluefin tuna, was also introduced.

At the beginning of his speech, Minister Ness said, "I would like to further strengthen the strong partnership in the fishing industry that has been built between Japan and Norway to date."

The seminar was divided into a "Norwegian mackerel seminar" and a "Norwegian seafood seminar." In the first half of the mackerel seminar, it was shown that in recent years, British (Scottish) mackerel has rapidly grown in popularity, while Norwegian mackerel has had an overwhelming share of the Japanese market up until now. It was pointed out that tariffs are behind this, and the Norwegian Chamber of Commerce in Japan has requested the Japanese government to "demand equal trade conditions for import tariffs." In order to make mackerel tariffs fair, the attendees were asked to sign a petition to abolish mackerel tariffs between Japan and Norway.

In the second half, Mr. Gunnar Domstein, the Board's 2nd Deputy Chairman of the Norwegian Seafood Federation and executive director of Norway Pelagic ASA spoke about the New species from fisheries and aquaculture in Norway - tuna and cod. We will expand soon on another article on this topic.
