The corporation aims to lead the transition toward sustainable marine protein production, promoting the development of next-generation aquaculture

Nichimo drives land-based aquaculture (RAS) in Japan with its 100% domestic modular technology

  (JAPAN, 7/8/2026)

The multinational seafood company develops the "Nichimo Modular RAS" system in Iwate Prefecture to mitigate geopolitical supply chain risks and combat the effects of global warming on marine products

TOKYO – Japanese company Nichimo Co., Ltd., led by its President and CEO Shinya Aoki from its headquarters in Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo, has marked a milestone in the domestic fishing industry by developing the first land-based salmon and trout aquaculture facilities built entirely with equipment manufactured in Japan. The technological complex is located near Kuji Fishing Port in Kuji City (Iwate Prefecture) and has been officially named "Nichimo Modular RAS".

The acronym RAS stands for Recirculating Aquaculture Systems, a closed culture method where water is continuously filtered and reused. The pilot testing phase of this system began with 30-ton tanks, successfully verifying filtration performance and water quality stability. With this advancement, the firm has structured a specialized consulting business division to transfer this operational knowledge to new producers in the fisheries sector.

Strategy against climate change and global risks

The decision to promote the development of purely domestic technology responds, according to Nichimo management, to recent changes in the international situation and the increase in global geopolitical risks. By dispensing with imported components, the company seeks to stabilize the supply chain and diversify operational logistical risks.

Likewise, the implementation of land-based aquaculture is consolidating as a strategic response to the impact of global warming, a phenomenon that drastically alters ocean temperatures and threatens future food security in the supply of fish and seafood. By operating in artificially controlled environments, cultures are protected from parasites such as Anisakis, marine diseases, and weather storms that affect traditional open-sea concessions.

Commercial trajectory and sustainable projection

This project is backed by the solid results that the Nichimo Group maintains at its land-based plant in Buzen City (Fukuoka Prefecture), operated in collaboration with partners such as Kyushu Electric Power Company. These facilities stably produce rainbow trout marketed under the regional brand "Mirai Salmon", a product fed with high-quality feed developed by the firm itself, outstanding for its high levels of glutamic acid and firm flesh texture. In addition to the land-based line, the corporation accumulates more than 40 years of experience in marine coho salmon farming in regions such as Hokkaido, Miyagi, and Iwate.

With a corporate history dating back to its founding in 1910 as a fishing net manufacturer, the Nichimo Group records consolidated net sales exceeding 139.7 billion yen and maintains commercial operations with 38 countries and regions worldwide.

Looking ahead, corporate leadership reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the company's strategic purpose:

"Covering everything from the shore to the table, and continuing its challenging journey into the future."

Through the turnkey commercialization of the "Nichimo Modular RAS" technological package, the corporation aims to lead the transition toward sustainable marine protein production, promoting the development of next-generation aquaculture across the Japanese archipelago.
