Contracts autoline vessels for fishing for toothfish

  (NORWAY, 9/13/2023)

The following is an excerpt from an article published by FISKERImagasinet:

Austral Fisheries (Austral) has announced that it has ordered a pioneering autoline vessel for fishing for toothfish in deep waters north of Antarctica. The new vessel has been designed by Marin Teknikk and will be built by the shipyard Baatbygg AS in Måløy.

The construction of the Austral Odyssey is also another important milestone for Austral Fisheries . It is the company's second newbuild in five years, after they were handed over the vessel Cape Arkona in 2020. This vessel, which is considered the most advanced in Australia's fishing fleet, was also built by Båtbygg AS . The new vessel is scheduled to be delivered towards the end of 2025.

A giant who will fish toothfish

With a maximum length of 68.55 metres, Odyssey will be one of the largest and most technologically advanced liner vessels of its kind. Austral Odyssey's design incorporates the knowledge and experience of the owners, designers and the shipyard.

The vessel will fish to participate in the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certified Heard Island & McDonald Islands fishing for toothfish. The fishing conditions here are among the toughest in the entire world.

"We are incredibly happy to once again collaborate with Baatbygg AS, and to welcome Marin Teknikk as designers of this fantastic project", says CEO David Carter of Austral Fisheries.

Has collaborated with Baatbygg since 2013

"Contracting this vessel is yet another historic moment in Austral's 50-year history. Fishing sustainably and in ways that reduce environmental impacts above and below water has never been more important. This project shows our commitment to this, about that, and it demonstrates our owners' faith in the future and in the Glacier 51 Toothfish brand".

Kjell-Inge Sjaastad, managing director of Baatbygg, says in a comment:

"We are proud and honored to be working with Austral Fisheries on yet another fantastic newbuild project. This confirms our well-established relationship and Baatbygg's position as a reliable supplier and partner. This is also recognition of the fantastic work that has been carried out by our team over many years", said Sjaastad.

In addition to the construction of Cape Arcona, Baatbygg has also rebuilt two fishing vessels for Austral Fisheries. In 2013, the liner Isla Eden was rebuilt, and the trawler Atlas Cove was converted from a combined trawler/snurper to a combined trawler and autoliner in 2015.

Toothfish are fished at depths down to 2,000 metres

Theo Verios, general manager of Austral's fleet in the south, was part of the Cape Arkona project. Now he will divide his time between Australia and Norway throughout the entire construction process for Austral Odyssey.[...]
