Aquaculture declared leading food producer at AquaVision

  (NORWAY, 6/10/2010)

An expert professor on Wednesday judged aquaculture as the winning food producer and a new net cleaning device won the AquaVision Innovation Award on the AquaVision conference’s last day in Stavanger, Norway.

“The potential for increased production seems larger for aquaculture than other food producing technologies,” declared Professor Frank Asche at the University of Stavanger.

Asche combined results from worldwide market research to reach his conclusion.

Earlier this year, he co-authored an article on sustainability and global seafood in Science. He expects aquaculture to have a long term growth that will turn it into the leading seafood supplier within 10-20 years — without harming the environment where it operates.

“There is nothing inherently unsustainable with aquaculture as long as the producers choose to operate on a sustainable basis,” Asche explained.

A revolutionary new method for cleaning fish farm pens’ nets brought Marine Inspector and Cleaner of Australia the AquaVision Innovation Award on the last conference day.

Marine Inspector and Cleaner’s brand new cleaning device for nets is easily operated by one man and an invention desired by fish farmers. Clean nets help improve the health and growth of fish and reduce parasites.

Nets can be cleaned on a regular basis thanks to the speed and ease of operation, thus resulting in minimal fouling growth, told Dr Robert Kirschbaum of DSM, which set up the prize.

AquaVision is a major venue that regularly brings together top executives from aquaculture and its stakeholders; 340 delegates from 26 countries attended this week’s conference.

“Aquaculture is a winning industry,” stated Executive Vice-President Nutreco Aquaculture/Skretting Group Knut Nesse in his closing remarks. "There is no doubt about that. Aquaculture is the blue revolution.”

“We are able to supply a growing population with healthy food, but our industry is also fantastic if you look at value created,” he added.

The biennial aquaculture business conference AquaVision began running continually in 1996 and has developed into a foremost meeting place for decision makers at a strategic level in modern aquaculture across the globe.

AquaVision is organised by Skretting and parent company Nutreco with daily coordination by Blue Planet. The next AquaVision will take place in 2012.
