Analyzing Chinese market for dried abalone
(CHILE, 1/10/2011)
In order to study the progress achieved by the abalone subsector with the Territorial Integrated Programme for Aquaculture (Aquaculture PTI), at the fourth working meeting they unveiled the results of a study that analyzed business opportunities for dried abalone in a market as important as the Chinese.
The results indicate that the five cities with the highest seafood consumption are: Fujian, Shanghai, Zhejiang, Hainan and Guangdong, with Fujian consuming the most, with a per capita rate of acquisition of 17 per cent.
The study also gave the market values of these products, where Japanese originated products such as Ji pin, Wang Bao and Ma Wo border the USD 2,500 mark per 500 grams, while the Filippino product Haliotis asinina has the lowest market value at just USD 100.
Between June and September 2010, China imported two tonnes of dried abalone for a total of USD 1.2 million, which came mainly from Japan and Australia.
Roberto Medina, a member of the board and CEO of the company Abalone Chile S.A., explains that one of the things that the sector fears, are the difficulties associated with operating and the investment needed to adapt to the dehydration process, as currently, industry individuals produce approximately 120 grams (formatting preserved in brine).
However, for optimal dry, raw materials should skirt the 240 grams, which would increase production costs and working capital.
However, he considers it an interesting alternative for adding value which could boost the domestic industry.
The manager of PTI Aquaculture, Ivonne Etchepare, says it is necessary to address the issue of technology transfer, along with a promotional and marketing support capable of generating a penetration strategy for dry Chilean red abalone in the Chinese market.
It also points to its repositioning as a product, to avoid confusion with the "loco", its national simile sold at a much lower price.
