Green light given for multi-million dollar investments in Los Lagos
(CHILE, 1/13/2011)
The Regional Environmental Commission (Corema) of the Region of Los Lagos, has approved a number of projects for the construction and modification of fish farm facilities, which will involve investments of over USD 48 million.
One of the investments will be made by Aguas Claras, which presented a plan to change its Río Chaica fish farming center, for USD 30 million, which will involve a workforce of 460 people.
This initiative will result in them building an area of 30,000 square meters. There, during the first stage, they will create a center for salmon farming. Then they will try to incorporate the production and sale of these products, reported Crónicas del Sur.
Secondly, Corema approved the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the construction and implementation of a recirculating aquaculture farm headed by Salmones Itata.
The company will invest USD 18 million for the installation of a fish farming plant in Huenquillahue Bay, in the town of Puerto Montt.
The establishment includes a production capacity of 6.5 million smolts during the first year and aims to increase this volume to achieve, after five years, 13 million smolts.
The production will be destined to supply Atlantic salmon to facilities that the company has in the Aysen Region.
The plant will have 448 incubation trays and 24 first-feeding tanks, one of the distinctive features being that it will have a water recirculation system, which will allow it to reuse 98 per cent of the water.
Salmones Itata, a subsidiary of Pesquera Itata, last year recorded revenues of around USD 75 million and earnings of USD 6 million.
Moreover, in September 2010, the company had nearly 5 million fish in sea farms located in the Aysen region.
The governor of Llanquihue, Francisco Muñoz, chaired the session of the Regional Environmental Commission and noted that these investments will generate new sources of employment that will give impetus to the regional economy.
On the other hand, at the same meeting, they approved a permit for the Aguanta fish farm owned by Marine Harvest, in order to expand its production capacity.
This company applied for permission to double its annual production of 2,200 tonnes to 4,500 tonnes, with an investment of USD 2 million.
Finally, Corema, through the Resolution on Environmental Qualification (RCA), allowed fish farming company Las Vertientes, to produce around 2.6 million fingerlings for sale to third parties, with an investment of USD 300,000.
