New cuttlefish plant to help industry recover in Talcahuano
(CHILE, 2/25/2011)
On Friday, the Minister of the Economy, Juan Andrés Fontaine, will open two projects financed by the Corporation for the Development of Production (Corfo) that will generate 85 direct jobs in two counties in the region of Bio Bio: Talcahuano and Penco.
The first initiative involves the installation of a cuttlefish processing plant, owned by Pesquera San Rafael.
The project will create 62 jobs in Talcahuano, following the devastating earthquake on 27 February 2010, which caused a strong impact on the national economy due to the destruction of the export infrastructure such as ports and roads, and a large loss of work force, stated several analysts.
At this new plant, there will be areas for processing, machinery, cooling tunnels with advanced technologies, wastewater treatment as well as construction and maintenance of freezers.
Corfo subsidized this factory with CLP 86 million (USD 177,300), although the total investment will reach nearly CLP 1.019 million (USD 2.1 million).
In addition, the landmark Casino Oriente de Penco will be reopened, as the restaurant and event center were completely destroyed by the earthquake, tsunami and subsequent looting.
For its restructuring, the CLP will invest CLP 139 million (USD 286,600), of which CLP 48 million (USD 99,000) will be subsidized by Corfo.
The launch of Casino will allow for 23 direct jobs, reports Agencia UPI.
In March last year, the Government announced it would invest USD 110 million to set up an initial plan of reconstruction after the earthquake and tsunami that occurred a month earlier.
Of that total, the fisheries sector would receive USD 10 million, of which 25 per cent will go towards replacing or repairing vessels that were damaged or lost, as published in the newspaper La Nación.
