Shrimp landings reach new record
(ARGENTINA, 12/21/2017)
Argentine shrimp (Pleoticus muelleri) landings have reached a new historical record this year, exceeding 220,000 tonnes when there are still a few days until the end of 2017.
According to preliminary figures released by the Undersecretariat of Fisheries of the Nation, until last December 13, 220,786.1 tonnes of the crustacean were unloaded, a volume that represents a growth of 23.7 per cent with respect to the 178,454.6 tonnes landed during all 2016.
The landings accumulated this year are also much higher than those registered in the full 2015 and 2014, which were 142,796.2 tonnes and 129,103.7 tonnes, respectively.
This growth is mainly explained by the greater availability of the resource, but also by a greater number of participants in the fishery.
Shrimp beam trawlers contributed the greatest part of the landings, when unloading 109.541 tonnes (50.4 per cent). They were followed by the coastal fresh fish boats, which contributed 68,177.8 tonnes, and the offshore ones, with 41,223.8 tonnes.
Puerto Madryn and Rawson, both in the province of Chubut, were the ports that received the largest landings, of 60,299.3 tonnes and 55,813.0 tonnes, respectively.
In third place was Puerto Deseado, in Santa Cruz, with 45,116.0 tonnes, and in fourth place, by quite a difference, Comodoro Rivadavia, in Chubut, with 16,206.3 tonnes.
