AKVA Group Poised to Lead the Future of Land-Based Aquaculture

  (NORWAY, 3/28/2025)

A Strategic Turnaround

Four years ago, AKVA Group faced a critical turning point. Customer dissatisfaction and financial losses made it clear that change was necessary. To regain its footing, the company underwent a major restructuring—transitioning from a contractor-based supplier to an industrial leader with deep expertise, scientifically validated technology, and a more sustainable business model, as reported by Anne Oma from AKVA Group.

Today, the results speak for themselves.

“We have successfully turned things around. Our solutions now ensure optimal fish health and operational efficiency, making land-based farming more profitable and predictable. Most importantly, our customers are satisfied,” says Siri Tømmerås, Commercial Director at AKVA Group.

Proven Solutions for Post-Smolt Success

Scientific documentation and real-world results are key to optimizing post-smolt production—a strategy that has already proven its value in sea-based farming.

Lower Mortality, Higher Efficiency

Extending the on-land growth phase significantly reduces biological costs and minimizes sea lice infestations. AKVA Group has seen remarkable results in collaboration with fish farmers. Hiddenfjord in the Faroe Islands has been a frontrunner in refining these technologies in partnership with AKVA Group. Several Norwegian farmers also report fewer delousing treatments and lower mortality rates thanks to post-smolt strategies.

“Larger smolt spend less time at sea, reducing their exposure to lice and disease-causing microorganisms. While land-based farming carries higher initial costs, those investments are quickly recovered through lower biological expenses and improved survival rates. Additionally, a large-smolt strategy allows for better utilization of the maximum allowed biomass (MTB),” explains Tømmerås.

Why Choose AKVA Group?

AKVA Group’s cutting-edge technology ensures optimal water quality and stable RAS (Recirculating Aquaculture System) operations, giving fish farmers complete control over water conditions, biomass, and fish health—with documented success. Our systems enable sustainable smolt production with real-time monitoring.

Maximizing Results Through Training & Advisory Services

To help farmers fully leverage its technology, AKVA Group offers training and guidance through its Production Advisory Services (PAS) team.

“Our collaboration with fish farmers has never been stronger. We see growing recognition of the value of tailored guidance and training. Our team integrates seamlessly into existing operations, providing support without disrupting daily routines. This partnership approach is key to maximizing efficiency,” says Tømmerås.

Commitment to Research & Innovation

AKVA Group invests heavily in research and development to enhance operational performance and ensure optimal fish health. A dedicated team of specialists and researchers collaborates closely with customers to document how various factors influence fish growth in both land-based and sea-based phases.

Hiddenfjord in the Faroe Islands stands out as an industry leader in large-smolt production, reducing exposure to sea lice and enhancing fish resilience.

“We cultivate our smolt at low temperatures to develop a stronger, more robust fish. This approach improves their transition to seawater and supports long-term growth,” explains Atli Gregersen, Director at Hiddenfjord.

Pioneering Sustainable Aquaculture

By combining advanced technology, research, and hands-on experience, AKVA Group continues to lead the way in land-based aquaculture and post-smolt production.

“We’ve learned valuable lessons from past challenges and have emerged stronger than ever. The future of land-based farming is bright, and AKVA Group is ready to take the lead in shaping its development,” concludes Tømmerås.
