The Alida site in Volda, where Ode is establishing the world's first commercial deep-water cod farming facility using submersible pens from AKVA group
World’s First Commercial Deep-Water Cod Farming Operation Launched in Norway
(NORWAY, 5/6/2025)
Norwegian cod farming company Ode is investing in submersible pens from AKVA group to enhance fish welfare and optimise production.
Norwegian aquaculture company Ode AS is set to become the first in the world to establish a fully commercial deep-water cod farming operation. In partnership with AKVA group, the company is investing in submersible pens to enhance fish welfare and optimize production efficiency. According to Anne Oma of AKVA group, the first four Nautilus systems will be deployed at Ode’s Alida site in Volda municipality during Q2 and Q3 of 2025.

This move is part of Ode’s broader strategy to drive innovation across its fully integrated value chain—targeting improvements in both product quality and operational sustainability. Cod, a deep-water species by nature, thrives in colder, more stable conditions below the surface. By submerging the pens, Ode aims to recreate these optimal environmental conditions, ensuring better welfare, consistent growth, and superior product quality year-round.
Drawing on experience from both salmon farming and earlier cod trials, submersible technology has demonstrated clear advantages. These include enhanced control over temperature, light exposure, and water quality—factors critical to fish health and growth.
“We are combining biological expertise with next-generation technology to create the best possible conditions for cod farming,” said Ola Kvalheim, CEO of Ode. “If we meet our performance goals this year, we plan to expand the use of submersible systems across other suitable sites—potentially redefining what constitutes an ideal location for cod farming.”
Partnership with AKVA Group
The Nautilus submersible pens, designed by AKVA group, are specifically engineered for deeper-water use and will leverage the strong ocean currents at the Alida site.
“This is a major milestone for cod farming,” said Torunn Jørstad, Sales Manager Nordic at AKVA group. “We’re proud to support Ode with a deep-water system that enhances both fish welfare and production outcomes.”
Jørstad praised Ode’s collaborative approach and forward-thinking mindset, highlighting the shared commitment to responsible innovation. The phased rollout strategy, she noted, ensures a careful, data-driven transition to deeper operations.
Ode currently operates six active sea sites along the Norwegian coast, a processing facility in Vartdal, and a dedicated sales team that supplies premium, farmed Norwegian cod to international markets throughout the year. With ongoing investments in sustainable technology and operations, Ode is positioning itself as a global leader in next-generation cod farming.
