Chile Hosts Key International Workshop for Swordfish Research and Sustainable Management

Experts from Latin America, Europe, and the U.S. Aim to Standardize Data to Ensure Conservation of This Valuable Eastern Pacific Species

SANTIAGO – The FAO office in Santiago, Chile, hosted an international workshop on swordfish data and scientific research from June 17 to 19. Organized by Chile's Undersecretariat of Fisheries (Subsecretaría de Pesca) and the Fisheries Development Institute (IFOP), the event brought together representatives from the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC), the European Union, the United States, Ecuador, and Chilean fishing sector stakeholders (Sernapesca, Subpesca, IFOP, artisanal fishers, vessel owners, and industrial fisheries).

Gonzalo Pereira, IFOP's Executive Director, explained that this workshop fulfills an IATTC initiative and seeks to standardize data collection capabilities for swordfish, a fishery of great interest to Chile, the United States, and Ecuador.
Dr. Patricia Zárate, Head of IFOP's Fisheries Assessment Department, highlighted the meeting's importance in strengthening scientific knowledge and sustainable management of this ecologically valuable species. Camila Bustos from the Undersecretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture also stressed that the workshop is a milestone for the fishery, reaffirming countries' commitment to improving their monitoring and data collection systems for more sustainable, science-based management.

Patricio Barria, IFOP's Senior Researcher, emphasized the significance of this collaboration in enhancing sampling systems in the Southeast Pacific and generating regional projects to bolster swordfish stock assessment. Dr. Carolina Minte, from the IATTC's stock assessment team, noted that data standardization will enable better advice for decision-making. Marcos Herrera of Ecuador agreed on the regional importance of this joint initiative between Ecuador and Chile.
The workshop underscores a vital collaborative effort to secure the future of swordfish and fisheries in the region.
