Strengthening Chilean Aquaculture: Training on the Macrobent Platform Gathers Sector Experts

IFOP and Subpesca promote environmental management with a key tool for seabed monitoring

With the aim of boosting environmental management in Chilean aquaculture, the Fisheries Development Institute (IFOP), in collaboration with the Undersecretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture (Subpesca), conducted an important online training session on the use of the digital platform www.macrobent.cl. The activity, aimed at analysis entities and environmental consulting firms specialized in aquaculture, took place on Wednesday, October 22, from the city of Puerto Montt.

Macrobent: Una Herramienta para la Sostenibilidad

The Macrobent platform is an online taxonomic information system and a technological tool that seeks to increase knowledge of the benthic organisms (macrofauna) inhabiting the seabed. Its information is crucial for the preparation of environmental reports and the analysis of macrobenthos, essential elements for evaluating the impact of aquaculture operations. The MACROBENT technology was transferred to SUBPESCA and IFOP for its implementation on a national level.

The session was led by researcher Lilian Díaz Galindo, who guided participants through the history and evolution of Macrobent, and detailed its main functionalities. Topics covered included:

• User registration on the www.macrobent.cl portal and information management.

• Process for online requirement processing, tracking of requests, and receiving responses within the system.

• Guide on the sample submission protocol, covering both digital and physical submission of material.

This activity is framed within the ASIPA Agreement study: "Study of the environmental performance of Aquaculture in Chile and its effect on placement ecosystems, 2025 – 2026". Furthermore, it is part of the permanent program in Fisheries and Aquaculture (LGPA 20.657), signed annually between the Ministry of Economy and Small-Sized Businesses and the Fisheries Development Institute.

The commitment of IFOP and Subpesca to the Macrobent platform and this training program reaffirms the effort to strengthen technological tools that ensure informed decision-making, directly contributing to sustainable aquaculture and the protection of Chilean marine ecosystems.
