The unprecedented proliferation of patuxo devours mussel seed in Galician culture rafts

The Galician Mussel Producers Organization (Opmega) warns of a massive plague of the swimming crab that directly attacks cultivation ropes and compromises the sector's future campaigns.

Vilagarcía de Arousa, Galician culture raft operators are enduring difficult seasons marked by prolonged red tides, extreme weather events, and historic production lows. However, this summer has brought an unprecedented threat for which the sector has no memory: a massive and unprecedented proliferation of the patuxo (also known popularly in Galicia as patexo or pateiro). This small swimming crab (Polybius henslowii), belonging to the Polybiidae family, has drastically modified its habitual behavior.

The 'patuxo' (Polybius henslowii) is a species of Brachyura decapod crustacean of the Portunidae family. The carapace of Polybius henslowii is almost circular, 48 millimetres (1.9 in) wide and 40 mm (1.6 in) long. The first pair of pereiopods (walking legs) carry claws, and the remaining four pairs are flattened with fringed edges.

Historically, the patuxo has been a common species on the marine sea beds of the Galician estuaries. Nevertheless, this season it has begun to ascend from the bottom toward the surface to massively invade culture raft ropes. Its objective is to voraciously devour the "mejilla", the local name given to the seed or young of the mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis) in its initial growth stage, before it can reach commercial size.

The Galician Mussel Producers Organization (Opmega) has already urgently requested the Marine Research Center (CIMA) to open a specific study on this phenomenon. "We do not remember anything like it. The patuxo was always in our estuaries, but we had never seen it eat the mussel seed in this manner. The magnitude of the problem has led us to ask CIMA to investigate it urgently," explains Ricardo Herbón, president of Opmega. The objective of this request is to provide documentation, determine the exact causes of this unusual proliferation, and evaluate what viable measures can be applied to protect the cultivation structures.

Keys to the crisis in the culture rafts

• Fulminant destruction: Producers report that collector ropes, which were previously completely full of seed, are left totally clean and empty within a matter of a few days.

• Most affected areas: The damage has been documented with special intensity and extreme aggressiveness in the Muros-Noia estuary, but worrying levels of impact are already recorded in the Arousa, Pontevedra, and Vigo estuaries.

• Climate change as a primary factor: Both scientists and the sector point out that global warming and the increase in water temperature are drastically altering the behavior, feeding patterns, and reproduction cycles of these crustaceans.

• Critical economic impact: Every rope that the patuxo empties represents production that will not reach port, placing the viability of harvest campaigns for the coming years in serious danger.

A sector at historic lows

This new plague arrives at an extremely delicate moment for Galician mussel aquaculture. The year 2025 ended as the worst financial year in decades for the sector: production dropped to 177,638 tons, representing a historic low and the third consecutive decline, remaining far from the nearly 300,000 tons recorded at the peak of the year 2006.

Throughout the current year, red tide episodes occurred consecutively with unusual severity and duration, eventually causing the simultaneous closure due to toxicity of all culture raft areas, an event without precedents in the history of this industry.

"We are concerned; the mussel sector cannot continue absorbing blow after blow," Herbón pointed out. Faced with this devastating scenario, Opmega will continue to share information regarding the evolution of the plague and will maintain open contact with both CIMA and the Consellería do Mar in order to coordinate joint solutions to mitigate the economic impact on the affected estuaries.
