Government and maritime workers agree to end port conflict

  (ARGENTINA, 5/10/2012)

The head of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries (Minagri), Norberto Yauhar, agreed with leaders of the Maritime Workers Union (SOMU) to call off the strike that has taken place for several weeks in all the ports of the country.

Yauhar and SOMU general secretary, Omar Suárez, confirmed the holding of a meeting at the Ministry of Labour's Office on Thursday.

The meeting will also be attended by entrepreneurs and representatives of SOMU to finally solve the conflict.

Yauhar stressed "the importance of solving these issues through a discussion with all the sectors," the agency Telam reported.

For some weeks, fish, mollusc and derived product exports were interrupted on account of the conflict between maritime workers and sea fishing companies of Mar del Plata (Buenos Aires) and of Patagonia.

The Argentinean Fisheries Business Council (CEPA), the Chamber of Argentinean Fisheries Industry (Caipa), the Union of Argentinean Fishing Interests (Udipa) and the Association of Coastal Fishing Vessels reported that fishing companies seeking to export their goods from the port of Buenos Aires were still prevented from doing so.

According to a statement issued by these organizations, they were stopped from loading containers on the boats, which they deemed unconstitutional.

The signatories said there still was a boycott supported by SOMU on the fishing industry.

"Since 26 April, the Argentinean fishing industry has not been able to export because of a boycott performed by the union," they protested.
