Spain contributes EUR 31,000 for Globefish

The Cabinet approved the settlement of an agreement between the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and the Environment and the United Nations Food Agriculture Organization (FAO) for the updating and operation of the data bank Globefish.
Under the agreement, the Ministry will provide EUR 31,000 for the maintenance of Globefish, which is FAO unit that is responsible for the information on international seafood trade. This unit is an integral part of Infopesca, Infofish, Info Peche, Infosamk, Eurofish and Infoyou networks, and plays a coordinating role in the activities of the network.
Its core is the database from which seafood prices are reported, market research of importance to fishing industries, as well as the analysis of market developments and trends, at both European and international levels.
Spain is one of the main markets for fish consumption, and occupies highlighted positions both in the ranking of importing countries and in the countries exporting fishery products. Moreover, it is one of the most active countries in the FAO Committee on Fisheries and the FAO Fishing Trade Subcommittee.
Therefore, the information provided is essential to set the position of Spain on fish product market regulation, both at national and European level in the field of the Common Market Organisation of Fishery Products, or internationally at the framework of the negotiations of economic partnership agreements Community, Association, or Areas for Economic Integration.
